GCSE Results Day 2026: What To Do, Resits, and Free Treats to Celebrate

GCSE results land on Thursday 20th August 2026 and no matter what results your child gets, it's worth remembering two things: reward the effort, not just the grade, and there is more than one route to where your child wants to end up. Sixth form, college, an apprenticeship, a resit; they're all valid next steps, and today's results are the start of that decision.

Here's what to actually do on results day, what to do if English didn't go to plan, and where to grab something free to celebrate either way.

What To Do on the Day

1. Collect results from school. Most schools open from around 8am for students to collect results in person, with some also releasing them via an online portal a little later in the morning. Check the specific instructions your school sent before summer, as timings vary school to school, and most students still prefer collecting in person with friends. I know it may be hard as you may want to be with your child when they collect their results, but respect their decision, and let them know you support them.

2. Take a moment before deciding anything. There's no need to make any big decision about next steps in the first hour. Whatever the results, it is important to process them regardless of the outcome: good, mixed, or disappointing. By taking your time, it means you allow your child to experience how they feel without any added pressure. They can then make a better, more informed decision rather than doing it fuelled by their raw feelings.

3. Talk through the options for sixth form, college, or apprenticeships. Entry requirements vary by school, college, and course, so it's worth checking directly with sixth forms or colleges if a grade has come in under what was expected. Many have more flexibility than students assume, especially with a good overall profile. For subjects such as Maths and English, many sixth forms and colleges offer a resit with support, but it is worth looking into. 

4. If English is the subject holding things up, look at a resit early. English Language GCSE grades are needed for the vast majority of sixth form, college, and apprenticeship routes, so it's usually the first subject worth sorting if it hasn't gone to plan. There are two resit windows to plan around, November and Summer, so there's no need to wait a full year, and no need to rush a decision today either. But, it is important to make a decision and then make a plan. Leaving it too late means your child has to cram rather than focussing on the areas that prevented them from achieving their desired grade. 

It is also important to note that if your child passes their English Language (grade 4), but wants to attend Russell Group Universities; or, enrol onto a competitive course, they will need to resit to achieve at least a grade 6 as Universities look at GCSE Grades.

Regardless of whether your child has passed English or not, if they are resitting it, it is best not to solely rely on what colleges and sixth forms have to offer. This is because they will be going over the GCSE curriculum in a general manner, ensuring it is covered. Therefore, it is best to enlist expert help so that your child is fully supported and covered.

5. Write down the next three steps while it's fresh. Whether that's contacting a sixth form, registering for a resit, or looking into a specific apprenticeship — a short, clear list today beats trying to remember it all in September.

If English Didn't Go To Plan

A disappointing GCSE English grade is one of the most common, and most fixable, results day setbacks. It's rarely about ability; it's usually about exam technique, timing under pressure, or a specific gap in understanding of the mark scheme. With focused support, a resit is often a realistic route to the grade needed for sixth form, college, or an apprenticeship, without losing a full year.

It's also far more common than it feels like on the day. Plenty of people now doing exactly what they set out to do had an English resit somewhere in their story, it wasn't the end of the plan, just a slightly different route to it.
